Details of the Kavumu incident, raised by diplomats with Minister for Foreign Relations and Cooperation Severin Ntahomvukye, have been confirmed by the diplomatic corps in Burundi but denied by the Ministry of Defence.
“This is something to follow up. If it is true, it is deplorable,” Ntahomvukye told a press conference in Bujumbura. He promised an enquiry into the matter and that punitive measures would be taken. Bujumbura-Rural Governor Balthazar Ntamahungiro and Commandant Gaciya Bwenge are understood to have been present during the raid. “This is a concern because, if the authorities continue to alienate the population, it will make the peace process much more difficult. Each one of these incidents serves to reduce our confidence in the government,” a diplomat in Bujumbura told IRIN on Wednesday.
