Troops reportedly deployed at border

The deployment of Ugandan troops on the border with Rwanda was detailed on Wednesday by the semi-official ‘New Vision’ newspaper. It said the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) had deployed over 1,000 soldiers in western Uganda, 4 km from the Rwandan border, at Mirama Hills, Kagitumba, Kafunzo, Kazinga and Rushenyi. The move was prompted by the deployment of Rwandan troops some 3 km across Uganda’s border, the newspaper reported. Ugandan army spokesman Captain Shaban Batarinza told IRIN on Wednesday he could not comment on the ‘New Vision’ report. “Wait for an official army statement,” he said.
