A broad-based coalition of Zimbabwean civic and political organisations plans to hold a peace rally on Saturday in the capital Harare.
“This will be a peace rally, calling on the government and political parties to be peaceful and respect the rule of law,” Lovemore Madhuku, vice chairman of the National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) told AFP.
Last month, the NCA organised a peace march which turned violent when it was attacked by liberation war veterans and supporters of the ruling ZANU-PF party on the streets of the capital. Two weeks ago, police invoked the colonial-era Law and Order Maintenance Act to stop public demonstrations without prior police permission or political rallies unless the president of the party in question was present.
But Madhuku said although police had not yet authorised the rally, to take place at a sport centre in Harare, it would proceed since it was not a political rally. “We don’t fall within the kind of meetings he (police chief) wants to stop,” Madhuku said.
