Norway said on Tuesday it was freezing aid to Zimbabwe worth an estimated US $2.25 million in protest at human rights violations.
News reports quoted foreign aid minister, Ann Kristin Sydnes as telling parliament: “We deem this measure necessary, given the gravity of the situation and the need to send clear signals to the authorities in Zimbabwe.”
The decision follows a visit by an official Norwegian delegation to Zimbabwe earlier this month to examine at first hand the situation following the invasion of more than 700 white-owned farms by veterans and government supporters.
Parallel to freezing aid, the Norwegian minister said, Oslo would also, “via non-state channels, increase our contributions to helping human rights and democratisation.”
