Deaths following clashes in southwest

Some two dozen people were killed and many more injured in fighting between residents of the southwest Nigerian towns of Ife and Modakeke, AFP reported local officials as saying on Friday.

The background to the fighting, which broke out on Thursday, is a dispute over political power at the local level and land ownership rights. An official at the university teaching hospital in Ife told AFP that “a lot” of people were dead and more than 50 had been brought in, many suffering from gun wounds.

The ongoing feud has left over 100 people dead in the past two months, AFP reported.
