The Angolan government has undertaken a diplomatic offensive to stop Togo from taking up the chairmanship of the Organisation of African Unity in retaliation for the West African country’s alleged links to UNITA, news reports said.
Togo is scheduled to take over the rotating leadership of the regional body at a summit planned for 12 July in Lome. In a UN report on sanctions busting in March, Togolese President Gnassingbe Eyadema was accused of helping UNITA leader Jonas Savimbi with arms and fuel in exchange for diamonds.
The Associated Press reported that Angola’s Foreign Minister Joao Miranda on Thursday summoned African diplomats based in Luanda to discuss the matter.
