Sankoh’s amnesty questioned

In Washington, US State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said on Thursday that the attacks by the RUF on the UN peacekeepers could nullify an amnesty that RUF leader Foday Sankoh and his men were awarded under the Lome agreement, AFP reported.

“He is carrying out acts which are outrageous and criminal ... he is in violation of the Lome agreement,” AFP quoted Boucher as saying. “The violations could invalidate his amnesty that’s provided in the agreement. The actions that he and his forces have taken need to be reversed immediately.”

The UN Security Council on Thursday expressed its “outrage” at the killing of the Kenyan peacekeepers “and its deep concern for the UNAMSIL troops who have been wounded or remain unaccounted for”.

“The Security Council condemns the fact that Mr. Sankoh has deliberately failed to fulfil his responsibility to cooperate with UNAMSIL in bringing these incidents to an end,” the Council’s president said in a statement. “The Council believes he must be held accountable, together with the perpetrators, for their actions.”
