Troops exonerated of diamond mining accusation

Investigations by the Nigerian Defence Intelligence Agency show that the allegations of illegal diamond mining made against Nigerian troops in Sierra Leone are unfounded, Defence Minister Theophilus Danjuma said. The allegations, made by the former force commander of the UN Mission in Sierra Leone, Maj-Gen Vijay Jetley, sparked a major row between Nigeria and the Indian commander. Danjuma said Nigerian troops were never deployed to the area where diamonds are mined. The intelligence agency’s report has been handed to the chief of defence staff, Vice-Adml Ibrahim Ogohi.
