15 reported killed in rebel attack

An attack on Tuesday on the southeastern town of Kinyinya by rebels believed to be operating from neighbouring Tanzania claimed the lives of 15 people, local authorities reported on Thursday. The rebels also injured an indeterminate number of people and burned several houses during the night raid on the frontier town, the Associated Press agency (AP) quoted Makamba provincial governor Gabriel Gunungu as saying. The attack on Kinyinya, 110 km southeast of the capital Bujumbura, was most likely a reprisal against civilians suspected of providing food or information to government forces, the report added. Intense fighting between government and rebel soldiers has also been reported this week at Buganda, Budaketwa and Mbizi in the southern districts of Mabanda and Kibago.
