World press body protests arrest of journalist

The New York based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) on Wednesday wrote to President Laurent-Desire Kabila reminding him of the “illegal detention” of Freddy Loseke Lisumbu la Yayenga, editor of the Kinshasa-based weekly ‘La Libre Afrique’, which is entering its fifth month. He was arrested following two articles that appeared in the December issue of the paper, warning of an imminent army-sponsored plot to overthrow Kabila. The CPJ, quoting sources in Kinshasa, said the journalist has been accused of “betrayal of the state in times of war”, a charge that can lead to a death sentence. The CPJ urged Kabila to take advantage of World Press freedom day on Wednesday to release Loseke.
