Northern states shelve Sharia

The governments of Nigerian states that have adopted the Sharia (Islamic law) agreed on Tuesday to revert to the penal code used in the north of the country since independence, ‘The Guardian’ reported on Wednesday.

The agreement came at a meeting in Abuja of Nigeria’s National Council of State, presided over by President Olusegun Obasanjo.

The code that has been in use in northern Nigeria, Vice President Atiku Abubakar told journalists, is substantially Sharia, but with a few sections modified to suit the circumstances of the country.
