Judgement expected Thursday in Hunzvi trial

The judge hearing the fraud trial against Zimbabwe’s war veterans leader Chenjerai Hunzvi is to rule on Thursday on a defence application that all charges be dropped, news reports said. Judge Paddington Garwe said in the Harare High Court on Wednesday that he would be ready to rule on the application on Thursday afternoon.

Hunzvi is charged with four counts of fraud relating to medical claims he submitted to the War Victims Compensation Fund in relation to injuries he claimed to have suffered in the 1970s while fighting against the white government of then Rhodesia. The state claims that Hunzvi, a medical doctor, forged his own medical certificates in order to defraud the fund and that there is nothing medically wrong with him.
