Opposition leader declares presidential candidacy

Seif Shariff Hamad, leader of the opposition Civic United Front (CUF) on Sunday declared his intention to run for the Zanzibari presidential election in October, Agence France Presse (AFP) reported. Hamad, who narrowly lost to President Salmin Amour in a disputed poll in 1995, said he was running to prove he was robbed of victory. Amour was then re-elected for a second and final five-year term by a margin of 0.04 percent. If elected, Hamad pledged to include members of Amour’s Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party in his cabinet to form a government of national unity, AFP added. Nobody from the CCM has yet declared their formal candidacy, though there has been internal pressure for Amour to amend the constitution and stand for a third term.
