Howard Wolpe, the US special envoy to the Great lakes region, met Congolese government officials in Kinshasa over the weekend, DRC state television reported. It described his mission as aimed at encouraging the various sides in the DRC war to respect the ceasefire so that the deployment of UN troops could go ahead. In comments broadcast by the television, Wolpe noted that one of the reasons for his visit was “the uncertainty on the ground”. “So, it is necessary to mobilise all the various bodies that are part of this international effort,” he said. “This process is continuing and the forthcoming visit of Ambassador Holbrooke leading a UN Security Council mission will be an additional factor to this effort and this is very important.”
