Opposition UDP selects new leader

    ABIDJAN
    The United Democratic Party has chosen Sam Silla as their presidential candidate in October elections, the party announced in a news conference on Friday. Silla stood in the 1992 legislative elections for the Bakau constituency under the ticket of the now outlawed People’s Progressive Party of ousted president Dawda Jawara. Silla, a retired colonel, served in the 3rd Marine Division of the Nigerian Army during the country’s civil war when he led federal troops in the capture of Port Harcourt, AFP said.
