Grain board sacked

Zimbabwe’s Lands and Agriculture Minister Kumbirai Kangai has fired the entire board of the state-owned Grain Marketing Board (GMB), the ‘Financial Gazette’ said on Thursday.

The report said the minister’s action follows the appearance in court this week of the board’s chief executive, Martin Muchero, on charges of fraud and corruption regarding the awarding of a US $4.6 million contract.

The paper added that the chairman of the board, Paddy Zhanda, is contesting the dismissal and has reportedly taken up the decision with President Robert Mugabe. GMB is the sole importer and exporter of Zimbabwe’s maize. Its output of the grain in 1999 amounted to 1.54 million mt against domestic requirements of 1.8 million mt.
