The chairman of Nigeria’s Human Rights Violations Investigation Commission has recommended monetary compensation for victims of rights abuses in the country, PANA reported.
Retired judge Chukwudifu Oputa suggested the establishment of a fund, to be backed by the international community, for compensation. Several people who have appeared before the commission demanded reparations. Most of them said they had suffered under the regime of the late General Sani Abacha.
The panel is hearing 150 cases and is modelled on South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
