ECOWAS envoy ends visit

ECOWAS special envoy General Idrissa Sire Traore ended a two-day assessment visit to Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, a humanitarian source told IRIN. Toure met President Kumba Yala, to whom he conveyed a special message from the chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), President Alpha Konare of Mali. Traore’s visit also included meetings with members of the UN system, the Guinea-Bissau military and various other actors. It followed last week’s crisis in the West African country where a former military strongman made an aborted attempt to take over the armed forces.
