Opposition leader arrested

Anderson Mazoka, the leader of Zambia’s opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) and 20 of his followers were arrested at the weekend and charged with holding an illegal gathering, media reports said. Among those arrested are Morgan Shamena, the Mayor of Solwezi, the administrative centre of the North-west province. The police reportedly said the group turned a social gathering into a political meeting in a restaurant owned by the Mayor in Solwezi. Mazoka is a former Zambian representative of Anglo American and also served as one of five directors on the board of Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (ZCCM). He entered politics in 1998 after retiring from Anglo American.
