Doctors stay away

Major surgery at Zambia’s main hospital has virtually stopped after senior doctors this week gradually withdrew their labour in support of a stoppage by their junior colleagues and because of the extra work load, news reports said on Friday. Last week, the government sacked more than three hundred junior doctors last week for their action in demand of better equipment, drugs and salary conditions. A few expatriate doctors and consultants are still working at the hospital. The BBC quoted nurses as saying Cuban doctors flown in to help after the sacking of junior doctors last week were hampered by language problems.
