Nigeria, Niger issue joint communique

President Olusegun Obasanjo and his counterpart from Niger, Mamadou Tandja, issued a joint statement on bilateral and regional cooperation as prerequisites for economic integration, ‘The Guardian’ reported on Wednesday. It urged member states of the Organisation for African Unity (OAU) to take the necessary measures at the national, regional and continental levels to ensure the effective implementation of the Abuja Treaty that provides for the establishment of an African Economic Community (AEC). The two leaders expressed support for the OAU’s efforts at conflict management and resolution in Africa and called on the international community to support them. They also expressed satisfaction at the role being played by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to ensure a peaceful resolution of developments in Sierra Leone, Guinea-Bissau and Cote d’Ivoire, the daily said.
