Mozambican President Joaquim Chissano told reporters on Saturday that he was prepared to meet with Afonso Dhlakama, leader of the former rebel movement Renamo, before Wednesday. Speaking at a press conference at the end of a four-day working visit to the western province of Tete, Chissano said he had he sent Dhlakama a letter telling the Renamo leader that he was ready to discuss all matters of “national interest” with him.
“If he says there must be a recount of the votes, I will give him a reply”, added Chissano. Renamo has been calling for a recount of votes cast in the December 1999 general elections. The Supreme Court declared the election largely free and fair. Earlier attempts by the two leader to get together stalled when Chissano reportedly refused a request from Dhlakama to meet on neutral territory.
