Police deployed to crush anticipated mass stayaway

Armed police were on Monday deployed in Masvingo, about 200 km south of the capital Harare, amid fears that the opposition Movement for Democratic Change(MDC) had begun a mass stayaway, the ‘Daily News’ reported on Tuesday. About 500 police officers, armed with AK 47 rifles were dispatched early in the morning to deal with violence associated with the stayaway. But the commanding officer for the the Masvingo district, Chief Superintendent Davies Chifamba, said the deployment was a normal patrol. “It is just a normal police deployment. We do this whenever we feel it is necessary since it is about Christmas time,” he said.
