Poor prison conditions

Malawi’s justice minister, Peter Fachi, is said to have been appalled at prison conditions in the country’s southern city of Zomba, according to news reports at the weekend. During a routine “familiarisation” visit, newspapers said he had seen at first hand conditions of overcrowding, poor santiation, and other factors making inmates vulnerable to contagious diseases like TB, diarrhoea, or scabies. Prisoners complained of a lack of water, and also raised concern that juvenile inmates frequently faced sexual abuse.
