President Jose Eduardo dos Santos of Angola marked the country’s 24th anniversary of independence from Portugal on Thursday with a visit to Lubango, capital of the southwest Huila Province, official media reported.
Dos Santos met provincial government officials to learn of the local situation at first hand, the reports said. The UN Humanitarian Assistance Coordination Unit (UCAH) this week said Huila was now home to 88,000 internally displaced people who had fled fighting between government forces and UNITA rebels.
