Kaunda’s son killed

The son of the former Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda was murdered by gunmen on Wednbesday night as he and his wife drove up to their their home in a suburb of the capital, Lusaka, news reports said on Thursday. The reports said Major Wezi Kaunda died in hospital at dawn nine hours later. The main opposition party, UNIP, which is still led by Kenneth Kaunda, said it could not rule out a political motive in the murder. Police said they had apprehended two suspects, one of whom they shot and killed. The other was in custody. Other sources in Lusaka told IRIN that Major Kaunda’s wife was unharmed, and discounted a political motive citing at least three cases monthly of prominent people murdered by armed hijackers.
