Decolonise How? The ethics of covering crisis in 2026. Lessons from the Middle East.
In the first of the new Decolonise How? webinar series, Patrick Gathara was joined by Assal Rad and Sana Saeed to discuss, broadly, the ethical failures, challenges and opportunities that mainstream media and humanitarian agencies face when communicating about humanitarian crisis in 2026.
What are we getting right, what are we getting wrong and how could we do better? The discussion included a specific focus on the framing of the genocide and wars in the Middle East, with the goal of drawing lessons that could be applicable to a wide range of crises.
The discussion examined how media and humanitarian narratives are constructed, what biases are baked in, and what it would take to build accurate and responsible coverage and communications.
