Not everyone reaches their destination. Zaro Hailyu, 28, walked for 15 days from his home in Eastern Ethiopia to Obock, hoping to cross into Yemen and Saudi Arabia, where he hoped to find work as a labourer. The trip cost him about 4000 biir — approximately 150 USD — but he ran out of money and he said he couldn't pay for the trip across the Red Sea. When I met him, he had decided to return home.
