Hard times for NGOs in Uganda

Mandeep Tiwana of CIVICUS Civil Society Watch analyses restrictive aspects of the Uganda NGO Registration Act 1989, the NGO Registration (Amendment) Act 2006, and the NGO Regulations 1990.

In Uganda: Legal framework restricts civil society, Tiwana looks at the legislative framework governing NGOs and the restrictions it places on their ability to function independently.

He says there is too much red tape in the NGO registration process, as well as concerns over government interference, and concludes that the regulatory framework is unjust and unfair.
