US pledges funds for AIDS programme

The US government has pledged US $30 million to support Malawi's five-year HIV/AIDS Strategic Framework launched last December by President Bakili Muluzi.

Announcing the funds in the capital, Lilongwe last week, US ambassador to Malawi, Ellen Shippy said: "The US will continue to support efforts in Malawi to prevent new infections and to assist those individuals, families and children already affected by this disease."

Shippy added that there were encouraging signs that fear, stigma and silence around the disease were being replaced by more openness and candour.
