Land mine treaty ratified

    NAIROBI

    Angola’s National Assembly has ratified the Ottawa Convention which prohibits the production and use of anti-personnel land mines.

    The Convention has been signed by more than 150 countries but to date only 66 have ratified it, Angolan television reported on Wednesday.

    According to political sources, during the Assembly’s session a member of the opposition Front for the National Liberation of Angola (FNLA), tried to introduce a resolution calling among other things for President Jose Eduardo dos Santos to engage in a peace process, dissolve parliament and form a transitional government of national unity. The Speaker of the Assembly ruled that the resolution was not acceptable as it was not on the agenda.
