The Zambian government has announced that it will pay off all money owed to local suppliers of the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (ZCCM) by the end of the week.
Deputy Finance Minister Godfrey Simasiku was quoted in news reports on Wednesday as saying that the government had sourced all the money required for the purpose, amounting to the equivalent of US $1.25 million. Simasiku said the ministry of finance together with ZCCM, which had since been transformed into an investment holding company, were finalising the reconciliation of figures.
The Mines Suppliers and Contractors association last week complained that their companies had been disadvantaged after the privatisation of the mines because of the delay in getting their money from ZCCM.
