Lagos calls for military help in fighting crime

    ABIDJAN

    Lagos State has asked the federal government for troops to help curb the rising crime in the country’s most populated city, Lagos, according to news reports.

    State officials say the city’s 14,000-strong police force is too small and ill-equipped for the metropolis of at least 10 million people, news organizations said. Lagos State Governor Bola Tinubu has been at the forefront of demands for each state to create its own police, which the government has refused.

    Nigeria has a population of some 120 million and a police force of around 135,000, Lagos State Information Commissioner Dele Alake said. Some 40,000 recruits are undergoing training and the federal government says it will recruit another 40,000 by 2003.
