Junta to sign deal with separatists

    ABIDJAN

    The leader of the Comoros military regime is expected to sign a reconciliation accord with Anjouan separatists at the end of the week, news reports said.

    On Tuesday, the Comoros foreign minister briefed the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) officials in Addis Ababa on his government’s negotiations with the Anjouan separatists.

    The proposed agreement would end the three-year secessionist crisis when Anjouan declared its independence from the main Comoro island of Moroni. The OAU helped draw up an accord that would have delivered a degree of autonomy to the three Indian Ocean islands, but Anjouan refused to sign.
