SACC to mediate govt/NGOs on AIDS

The South African Council of Churches (SACC) wants to get government, business and civil society together to step up efforts to fight HIV/AIDS.

Senior SACC officials were alarmed by recent reports by the AIDS lobby group, Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), that the national HIV prevalence rate had reached 30 percent and was still rising.

"The SACC is committed to facilitating co-operation among all sectors of society to prevent new infections and to ensure that all people have access to appropriate treatment and care," a local newspaper, The Sunday Times, quoted SACC general secretary Eddie Makue as saying.

The church body has been concerned about ongoing tensions between NGOs and the government.
