Huge cash boost for HIV vaccine research

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation on Wednesday pledged US$287 million in a bid to speed up research on an effective HIV vaccine.

According to the BBC, the funds were being split into 16 grants for research teams across the globe.

"Unfortunately, developing an effective vaccine has proven to be difficult, and despite committed efforts, progress simply has not been fast enough," said Dr Nicholas Hellmann, of the Gates Foundation's AIDS, tuberculosis and reproductive health programme.

The latest contribution comes shortly after Bill and Melinda Gates received a $31 billion donation from billionaire Warren Buffet to boost their philanthropic efforts.
