UN agency to assist Bangui develop disarmament plan

    The UN Development Programme (UNDP) will help the Central African Republic (CAR) in its development of a disarmament action plan, the UNDP deputy representative in the country, Assadi Ahamadi, said on Wednesday. State-owned Radio Centrafrique reported that Ahamadi made the remarks during a meeting with the CAR minister in charge of youth, sports, art and culture, Desire Zanga-Kolingba, in the capital, Bangui. Ahamadi and Zanga-Kolingba had met to discuss a project to reintegrate former combatants into society. "The ministry in charge of youth has an important role to play since many of the ex-combatants were recruited from the youth," Ahamadi was quoted as saying. The former combatants include those loyal to CAR leader Francois Bozize who supported him during six months of rebellion, which ended on 15 March 2003 when he overthrew President Ange-Felix Patasse. Zanga-Kolingba said the success of the disarmament project would help restore peace across the country. The project is due to be implemented in Bangui and in the provinces of Kemo, Nana Grebizi, Ouham and Ouham Pende.
