UN office gets one-year extension

    NAIROBI

    The Security Council has approved a one-year extension of the United Nations Peace-building Support Office in the Central African Republic (BONUCA), so that the office could help see the country through elections in 2004, UN News reported on Wednesday.

    The extension is valid until 31 December 2004. UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan recommended the extension to enable BONUCA to continue supporting the government's effort to return the country to democratic order at the end of 2004.

    BONUCA is supporting the national political conference that began on Monday designed to reconcile the nation, deeply divided by years of war and political and ethnic rivalry.

    A total of 350 delegates, representing different political, social, religious and professional affiliations are attending the conference that will discuss national reconciliation, political and diplomatic issues; the economy and finances; educational, cultural and social matters. A 40-member commission, which received the support of 15 UN experts, has already drawn up agendas for each of the issues.
