Britain pledges US $35 million to battle corruption

    Britain said on Thursday it was providing Zambia with US $35 million to support its balance of payments and to help a campaign against corruption, news agencies reported. One quarter of the cash will be used to enhance the work of the Anti-Corruption Commission while the rest is budgetary support, British International Development Minister Clare Short said in a statement in the Zambian capital, Lusaka. “Budgetary support is to help improve services to the people,” said Short, at the end of a three-day tour of Zambia to encourage support for good governance and debt relief as well as support for the campaign against AIDS and poverty. Short called for stronger financial systems that make corruption difficult and more effective judicial systems to bring to account those guilty of graft.
