Nigerian plans to spend 11 billion naira (US $98 million) a year on an expanded forestation programme to halt the desert that is advancing southward by 15 km a year, solid mineral Minister Kanu Agabi announced.
“At that rate it will not be long before the entire nation ceases to be habitable,” he said.
Agabi unveiled the forestation plan at the inauguration of the National Coal Birquetting Committee in Abuja, the capital, PANA reported on Wednesday. The use of coal rather than firewood is a major plank of the programme, Agabi said. The government has approved 100 million naira (US $890,869) to promote the coal-briquetting project.
