    Ghanaians will on Thursday vote in a run-off election to elect a new president after the first round failed to produce a clear winner from contestants of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the ruling National Democratic Congress, media reports said.

    John Kufuor of the NPP goes into the race with a 4-percent first round lead ahead of Vice President John Atta Mills, who is hoping to succeed outgoing President Jerry Rawlings, completing his second four-year term in office.

    The BBC reported on Wednesday that many Ghanaians were concerned that whoever emerges winner may inherit “a country dangerously divided along ethnic lines” in the light of the strong ethnic tones of the campaigns by both candidates.
