South Africa is considering how to restructure its ineffective National AIDS Council (SANAC), and will make an announcement on the future of the body by the middle of August, officials said on Monday.
During a briefing in the capital, Pretoria, director-general of the health department, Thami Mseleku, said a forum on the matter would be held at the beginning of next month.
Opposition Democratic Alliance health spokeswoman Dianne Kohler-Barnard told the local Business Day newspaper that the council was a "huge money-waster", which hardly ever met while under the leadership of former deputy president Jacob Zuma.
SANAC was meant to be the government's leading agency in the fight against HIV/AIDS, but various political parties and the general public have made numerous calls to overhaul or even replace the council with a new structure. Interested parties have been advised to submit proposals on how the council should be restructured to the health department.
