Australia's Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer, on Wednesday announced a further US$17 million pledge to help tackle HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria in developing countries.
Downer said the funds would be channelled through the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. His announcement coincided with the Fund's replenishment meeting, which has just ended in the South African port city of Durban.
"Global Fund grants have allowed more than half a million people [worldwide] to be treated with anti-AIDS drugs; more than 1.4 million people to be treated for TB; and more than 11 million insecticide-treated bed nets to be distributed to prevent malaria," he told The Australian newspaper.
This pledge brings Australia's total donations to the Fund over the past four years to US$75 million.
