Govt helps replenish Global Fund kitty

South African Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang has announced an additional US$600,000 pledge for this year to the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

Tshabalala-Msimang said this contribution brought to $10 million the amount pledged by her government over a period of five years from 2003 to 2007.

"We further remain committed to supporting the Global Fund, consistent with our potential and ability to do so," the minister told reporters at the current mid-term review of the Fund's replenishment meeting in the port city of Durban, South Africa.

The meeting, which ended on Wednesday, aimed to give donors a chance to assess funding gaps and discuss effectiveness and future needs.
