Govt reacts to ARV shortage claims

    JOHANNESBURG

    Uganda's Ministry of Health has allayed fears that its free antiretroviral (ARV) rollout programme had hit a roadblock.

    The response followed recent reports from AIDS activists that depleted ARV supplies were forcing some treatment centres to cut back on their rollout targets.

    Dr Alex Opio, assistant commissioner of the national disease control programme, said there was enough stock to last until August, when the next shipment was expected.

    The local New Vision newspaper quoted him as saying, "At the moment there is no cause for alarm ... if anything is to change, the public, especially [HIV-positive] patients, would be informed."
