The only way to reverse the feminisation of HIV/AIDS is to allow women greater control of their bodies and their lives, the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) said on Thursday.
Ensuring the full participation of women in decision-making could change the course of the pandemic, UNFPA Executive Director Thoraya Obaid told a panel discussion at the UN High Level Meeting on HIV and AIDS in New York.
Obaid noted that 20 years ago a third of the people living with HIV globally were women, but this number had now climbed to nearly half, with about 75 percent of them living in sub-Saharan Africa.
