Piot motivates AIDS summit delegates

UNAIDS Executive Director, Peter Piot, on Wednesday called for bolder action by African leaders against HIV/AIDS.

Speaking at the on-going Special Summit of African Union on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (ATM) in Nigeria's capital Abuja, Piot challenged delegates to move beyond crisis management and to adopt and implement long-term strategic responses instead.

Piot noted that while some level of progress had been achieved by various countries over the years, more concrete measures were needed for the fight against the pandemic to be won.

"There is every indication that our investments over the years are paying off. We must harmonise existing [anti-AIDS] programmes to be more effective and align our national priority with all stakeholders working together," Piot said.
