Greater microbicide support urged on International Women's Day

World's leaders were urged on Wednesday - International Women's Day - to increase support for the development of women-controlled anti-AIDS methods, such as microbicides.

According to Dr Zeda Rosenberg, a director of the International Partnership on Microbicides, it was imperative that all women be guaranteed the tools to secure healthy futures for themselves and their families.

"To protect individuals, preserve families and control the spread of disease, we must seriously focus our efforts on the population at greatest risk of becoming infected: women in developing countries," she said in a statement.

Although still undergoing research, experts were confident that a suitable microbicide might be 50 percent to 60 percent effective in preventing transmission of the HI virus.

Applied before sex, vaginal microbicides are substances that could kill, neutralise or block HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
