Tiger Brands, South Africa's largest food and healthcare company, has its sights set on the government's antiretroviral drug tender, the local Business Day newspaper reported.
The US $573 million tender for the government's free treatment programme was granted in March last year to seven drug manufacturing firms, with local generic manufacturer, Aspen Pharmacare, getting the lion's share.
Speaking recently at his firm's annual meeting, Mike Norris, director of Tiger Brands' pharmaceutical arm, Adcock Ingram, said he hoped to get Medicines Control Council approval for 19 new antiretroviral products by early next year.
The firm was expected to add up to $17 million annually to its revenue if it secures the tender.
