Millions on ARVs by 2008 - Clinton Foundation

The Clinton Foundation on Thursday said it hopes to have 2 million of the world's HIV-positive people on antiretroviral (ARV) drugs by 2008.

The Foundation's adviser, Ira Magaziner, said the non-profit initiative was already treating 250,000 people - most in developing countries - but more could be done.

Magaziner estimated that only about 1 million of the 6 million people who need treatment globally were receiving it.

"It's a global health emergency ... We can't turn our backs on all these people and let them die," Associated Press quoted Clinton's adviser as saying.
